Honoring the Many Forms of Mothering

Honoring the Many Forms of Mothering

Honoring the Many Forms of Mothering

As Mother’s Day approaches, I find myself thinking less about picture-perfect bouquets or greeting card clichés — and more about the deeper, quieter forces that shape and support us.

Because the truth is, “mothering” can take many different forms.

It might look like a biological mom, yes. But it also looks like the friend whose always there and always picks up the phone when we need them most. The mentor who guides us to notice the strengths that we often overlook within ourselves. The sibling who quietly shows up, again and again. The community we choose — and the people who choose us back.

At CMD, we’re continually inspired by these everyday acts of care, support, and presence. And this year, the new Kith & Kin Collection was designed and crafted in their honor. Each design in this six-piece release is a tribute to the invisible threads that bind us — between generations, between chosen family, and between the different versions of ourselves.

These pieces aren't just for Mother’s Day. They’re for anyone who’s ever offered a steady hand, a word of wisdom, or a moment of calm in the middle of the storm. They’re meant to be worn as reminders of the people who help hold us together.

From the graceful linkwork of the Lore Earrings to the grounding elegance of the Mainstay Necklace, each design offers a subtle symbol of connection and care. Explore the full Kith & Kin Collection, or shop CMD’s curated Gifts for Mom Under $200 edit for thoughtful tokens that feel just right.

Whether you’re celebrating your mom, someone who’s like a mom, or honoring the mothering you’ve done for yourself this year — I see you. And I’m sending love your way.

Join Me in DC This Weekend!

We’re celebrating community and connection in person this weekend at a special Ring Bar Pop-Up event at The Phoenix in Georgetown!

The Phoenix is one of CMD’s longtime stockists and favorite small businesses. Sam, the incredible owner of The Phoenix, has championed independent designers like CMD for decades. If you’re local to the DC area or want to take a little jaunt, I’d love to see you. Come try on rings, create your perfect stack, and shop the full CMD collection at this most amazing venue.

Custom Stories We Can't Stop Thinking About

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on some of my favorite custom projects — the kind where memory, metal and meaning all collide. From heirloom diamonds and recycled gold to entirely bespoke wedding bands, these are the stories that remind me why I feel so called to this work... If you’ve been holding onto diamonds, want to recycle metal for [...]

Designing LP Giobbi’s Wedding Bands
Designing LP Giobbi’s Wedding Bands

When LP Giobbi asked me backstage at the Fox Theatre if I would design her and Chad’s wedding bands, I was absolutely floored. Floored in the “hold it together, Colleen” kind of way. Internally, I was doing cartwheels. If you’ve been here a while, you know that LP and I first connected through music and mutual admiration. What began as a soul-recognition [...]

Reconstruction & Recycling Magic at CMD
Reconstruction & Recycling Magic at CMD

Over the years, I can’t tell you how many times I have gotten requests to repurpose precious family diamonds or to redesign jewelry to have a CMD aesthetic. Clearly, there is a real interest in transforming heirloom pieces, resetting diamonds, or creating something entirely new from older jewelry you no longer wear. You asked and now, we deliver! [...]
