What Handmade Jewelry Really Means at CMD

What Handmade Jewelry Really Means at CMD

When I say CMD jewelry is handmade, I mean that quite literally.

Somewhere in our Upstate New York production studio, an actual person has cut the metal, soldered the seams, filed the edges, sanded the surface, polished it, checked it, adjusted it and probably polished it again. There are times when we'll spend an hour making a tiny improvement that no one but another jeweler would ever notice, but we'll notice it. That's enough reason to do it.

“Handcrafted” gets used so often that it can start to sound like marketing language. For us, it isn't. It's simply a description of how the jewelry actually gets made.

There Are Real Hands Behind Every Piece

One of my favorite things to share on Instagram lately has been little glimpses of life around the jewelry bench. They're not always glamorous, and you won't see a dramatic reveal in every video. Sometimes it's simply someone polishing a ring, soldering a seam, shaping metal or carefully setting a stone.

To me, those are some of the most beautiful parts of the process because they're the steps that make the finished piece possible.

When people ask me what handmade really means, this is what I think about. It means there is an actual person behind every step of the process. It means my talented production team shows up every day and pours creativity, patience, problem-solving and years of skill into the work. It means every finished piece has been touched, examined and cared for by people who genuinely want it to be the best it can possibly be before it leaves our studio.

Handmade Applies to Every CMD Piece

I think people sometimes assume handmade jewelry refers primarily to Custom and Reconstruction jewelry, but every piece that leaves CMD begins with skilled hands.

That includes an Everyday stacking ring, a pair of earrings, a bracelet you've worn for years, a solid gold wedding band and a one-of-a-kind engagement ring. Different pieces require different processes, but there are real tools, meticulous hands and years of experience behind all of them.

There isn't a conveyor belt hiding in the back room, and there isn't a machine doing the difficult work for us. It's simply a small team of women who really love making beautiful things.

The Tiny Details Matter

Jewelry-making is full of details most people will never consciously notice. A fraction of a millimeter can change how two rings sit beside each other. An edge that feels slightly too sharp gets softened. A surface gets polished again because someone on the team knows it can be better.

Those details matter to us even when nobody else will ever know they happened.

I love seeing my team gathered around the bench solving a problem together. I love watching a pile of raw metal slowly become someone's most coveted ring. And I love knowing exactly where a piece came from before it leaves our hands and becomes part of someone else's life.

Made to Order, Not Made for the Masses

Much of the CMD collection is made to order, which means we aren't filling a warehouse with thousands of identical pieces and waiting for someone to buy them. In many cases, your jewelry begins its life after you place your order.

That production model allows us to work intentionally, make careful adjustments and keep our process connected to the individual piece in front of us. It also means handmade jewelry may occasionally ask for a little more patience.

Do we move a little slower because of that? Absolutely. Would I change it? Not for a second.

If you'd like to read more about the broader philosophy behind that choice, I wrote A Case for Slow Jewelry in a Fast World about why I believe fewer, thoughtfully chosen pieces can carry us much further than constantly chasing what's new.

From Our Hands to Yours

Most of all, I love knowing that when someone opens a CMD box, they're holding something that didn't come from an anonymous factory halfway around the world. It came from a small studio where every detail mattered, every decision was intentional and every person involved cared deeply about the outcome.

And our work isn't really finished when that jewelry leaves the studio. That's when you begin wearing it, scratching it, traveling with it, stacking it differently and making it unmistakably yours. That's the other half of the story, and it's why I believe so strongly in creating wearable art for real people.

The world is moving faster every year, but I don't think beautiful things need to keep up. Some things deserve care, attention and skilled human hands. Jewelry is one of them.

Ready to Own Something Made Just for You?

Whether you're starting your first stack, choosing something from our Ring Bar, investing in solid gold, or ready to transform something you already own, every CMD piece starts with skilled hands, real tools and people who genuinely care about the outcome.

And if Reconstruction has been on your mind, you can learn more about the process or book a consultation with me in person or virtually.

Thank you for valuing the hands behind the work,
Colleen
