MEET COLLEEN MAUER

Designer, Founder & Creative Director of CMD

I’ve been designing jewelry for more than two decades, but I still get the same thrill from seeing an idea in my head become something someone wears every day. My background is in industrial design, so I’ve always been drawn to form, proportion, materials and the way objects interact with the body.

CMD is where all of those things come together, with a little edge, a lot of experimentation and an ongoing belief that the jewelry you love most shouldn’t be saved for special occasions.

I DIDN’T SET OUT TO BECOME A JEWELRY DESIGNER

I studied Industrial Design at Virginia Tech, and after graduating, I headed west to California for my first design job. I thought I had a pretty clear idea of where I was going, but life had other plans.

After a year of planning, I took six months to travel around the world with a backpack and a lot of curiosity. I came home with a wider perspective, more confidence in my instincts and a growing sense that I wanted to make things in a way that felt more personal.

San Francisco became home, and over time I started experimenting with jewelry. What began as a creative outlet slowly became something much bigger. I built CMD piece by piece, learning as I went, trusting my eye and following the work that kept pulling me back in.

These days, I design from The CMD Shop in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where I meet with clients during my scheduled Open Hours and by appointment, both in person and virtually. All CMD jewelry is handcrafted to order by our talented production team in Upstate New York.

A lot has changed since those early San Francisco days, but CMD is still intentionally small, hands-on and deeply connected to the people who make and wear the jewelry.

FROM SKETCHBOOK TO EVERYDAY ARMOR

My ideas rarely arrive on command. They show up on walks, while traveling, in the shower, in architecture, in natural textures, or as a quick sketch I need to get down before it disappears.

My industrial design background is still very much part of how I work. I think about proportion, balance, negative space, movement and how a piece sits on the body. I want jewelry to feel considered, but never precious in a way that makes you afraid to wear it. In fact, some of my favorite pieces are the ones that become so much a part of you, they’re the jewelry you forget you have on.

I love designing pieces with enough personality to stand on their own, but enough versatility to be made entirely your own. Stack them up, mix your metals, pair them with pieces you already love and let them become part of the signature look that feels like you.

JEWELRY IS MY MEDIUM. CONNECTION IS MY CRAFT.

Twenty-plus years in, one of my favorite parts of this work is still getting to know the people who wear it. I love helping someone build a stack that feels completely like them, hearing the history behind an heirloom we’re about to reconstruct, or watching someone try on a piece they never would have chosen for themselves and immediately know it’s the one.

Jewelry may be what brings us together, but the people, stories and relationships around it are what have kept me doing this for more than two decades. That connection has always been my why, and it’s still what makes this work mean so much to me.

WHEN I’M NOT DESIGNING...

I love getting outside, walking and spending my mornings at the beach with my girl Miglia. I’ve built a daily meditation and journaling practice that helps me slow down, check in and start my day with intention. Beyond that, you’ll probably find me traveling, listening to music, cooking or dancing. Making space for the things that light me up is good for the creative soul, and I’ve learned that stepping away from designing is often what brings me back to it with fresh eyes.

I’ve always been inspired by movement, architecture and the little visual details most people walk right past. I’m constantly noticing shapes, textures and tiny details around me that may eventually find their way into a design. That curiosity is a big part of how I design and, honestly, how I move through the world.

IT MAY HAVE MY NAME ON IT, BUT CMD IS A TEAM EFFORT

I’m lucky enough to work alongside a small, mighty team of women who bring every CMD piece from idea to finished jewelry. I lead the design from Asbury Park, while our production team handcrafts each piece in Upstate New York. From design and fabrication to the website, customer experience and everything in between, there’s a real person behind every part of CMD.
