There’s a conversation we’ve been having more and more often lately at CMD. It usually starts with someone asking about solid gold.
Sometimes it’s because they’re marking something important: an engagement, a milestone birthday, a push present, an anniversary, a personal reinvention. Sometimes it’s because they’re tired of buying jewelry that doesn’t hold up over time. And increasingly, it’s because they already own gold jewelry that’s sitting unworn in a drawer and they’re wondering: “What can I turn this into instead?”
That question says a lot about where CMD is headed.
For over a decade now, we’ve been working with solid 14K gold in our Special Occasion line alongside our signature Everyday collection in gold-fill and sterling silver. But behind the scenes over the last few years, we’ve been quietly refining and deepening our craft.
The future of CMD is custom work, reconstruction projects, heirloom redesigns, and creating jewelry meant to last for generations. We love this work deeply. There’s something incredibly meaningful about taking materials that already hold history (think inherited rings, broken chains, pieces from past relationships, stones tucked away for years) and transforming them into something someone genuinely loves wearing again.
Because jewelry shouldn’t spend its life hidden in a box. It should live with you.
If you’ve followed CMD for a while, you probably already know this: we’re huge believers in high-quality gold-fill jewelry.
Our Everyday line is primarily handcrafted in 14K gold-fill and sterling silver because we wanted to create jewelry that felt elevated, timeless, durable, and wearable every single day, without requiring a massive investment upfront.
Gold-fill is not gold-plated jewelry. It’s a thick layer of real 14K gold pressure bonded to a brass core, making it dramatically more durable and longer-lasting than plating. It’s hypoallergenic, beautiful, and designed to stand up to everyday wear.
In fact, working with gold-fill is harder than working with solid gold in many ways. Most jewelers won’t even touch it. Because the outer gold layer is precious, every solder, every file mark, every tiny adjustment has to be approached thoughtfully and carefully. You can’t aggressively sand or buff imperfections away the same way you can with solid metal without risking damage to the gold surface.
It took years of experimentation and refinement for us to become truly skilled at working with the material. We’re incredibly proud of that craftsmanship. Gold-fill remains one of the best investments you can make if you want quality jewelry at a more accessible price point. And we’re never moving away from that.
Our Everyday Collection will always be part of CMD because we believe jewelry should also be collectible, wearable, layerable, and attainable. Especially the pieces you reach for constantly. Especially the hoops you live in all summer long. (Which is exactly why our current Last Chance Earring Sale is a great chance to get a new favorite pair just in time for summer before they’re gone for good!)
Because solid gold is different. Not “better” in a moral sense. Not more meaningful automatically. Just… different in what it offers.
Solid gold is forever material. It can be repaired, reshaped, melted down, reconstructed, handed down, redesigned decades later, and worn continuously for generations.
It holds value. It becomes part of your story. And increasingly, people are craving exactly that.
We’re living in a time where many people are becoming more thoughtful about how they shop. Less fast fashion. Fewer disposable purchases. More intentional investments in pieces they truly love and plan to wear for years. We see that shift happening every day inside CMD.
Clients come to us already knowing they wear our jewelry constantly. They know which pieces became part of their identity. They know what they never take off. And once someone reaches that point, investing in solid gold starts to make sense. Not because you have to. But because sometimes you want the version you can wear forever. The version that someday becomes someone else’s favorite piece, too.
One of the biggest shifts at CMD lately has been the growth of our reconstruction and custom work. It feels deeply aligned with who we are becoming as a brand.
We’re meeting more and more people who already have valuable materials sitting unworn at home. They bring us their inherited gold, broken jewelry, outdated settings, stones from old engagement rings, single earrings missing their match. Instead of letting those pieces collect dust, we help clients recycle and transform them into jewelry they actually adore wearing.
Sometimes we use the original stones. Sometimes we recycle the metal for credit toward a new piece. Sometimes we completely reinvent the design while preserving the emotional significance.
There’s something incredibly beautiful about that process. It’s sustainable, thoughtful, and personal. And... it creates jewelry with soul.
One thing we’ve learned through custom work is that clients often assume they need to complete everything immediately. You don’t!
Maybe you start with one ring now and build a stack later. Maybe you mix solid gold with gold-fill for the moment and upgrade over time. Maybe you redesign one heirloom piece this year and come back for the next project months down the road.
We actually love working this way because it allows people to create intentionally instead of rushing through the process. Jewelry collections evolve over time. Yours should too.
We even hold extra stones from reconstruction projects for future designs because many clients already know they want to continue building later.
And increasingly, we’re discussing future 10K solid gold options as well. This is another great way to make heirloom-quality jewelry more accessible while still offering longevity and value.
We’ll always create Everyday pieces in sterling silver and gold-fill because they’re foundational to who we are. They allow people to collect, layer, experiment, gift, and wear beautiful jewelry daily.
But more and more, we’re leaning into custom work, solid gold, reconstruction projects, and deeply personal jewelry experiences. We use meaningful design to transform the jewelry already in your drawer into future heirlooms that carry stories forward instead of being forgotten. That feels really right to us.
If you’ve been curious about investing in solid gold, redesigning inherited jewelry, starting a reconstruction project, or simply understanding the difference between our Everyday and Special Occasion collections, I'd genuinely love to help guide you through it.
And if you’re not ready for that yet? That’s okay too.
Maybe now’s simply the moment to grab the hoops you’ve been eyeing during the Last Chance Earring Sale before they disappear for good. Summer is coming, after all… and hoops are kind of everything this time of year.
Wherever you’re starting from, there’s room for you here.
