First, We Say Goodbye

Since the beginning of this year, clients from coast to coast have been mailing, carrying and carefully placing deeply personal jewelry into my hands.

Old engagement rings. Broken chains. Inherited heirlooms. Pieces tied to marriages, grandparents, milestones, grief, growth and entirely different versions of themselves.

Every single reconstruction project begins with one thing: trust. And I don’t take that lightly.

Lately, our benches have been overflowing with these projects. Current reconstruction projects include diamonds waiting to be reset, heirloom gold waiting to be recycled, and pieces with complicated histories waiting for a completely new chapter.

Some projects are subtle evolutions, while others are dramatic transformations. Almost all reconstruction work begins with a conversation, and often a little nervousness on both sides. Letting go of old jewelry can feel emotional, even when it’s been sitting untouched in a box for years.

What I’ve learned over the years is that the fear isn’t about changing the jewelry. It’s about losing the meaning. The beautiful part of our reconstruction work is that it doesn’t erase the story, but preserves it in a way that gets to continue living with you.

How CMD Got Into Reconstruction Work

Reconstruction projects weren’t originally part of the CMD business model.

Clients started bringing me inherited pieces they never wore. Think old engagement rings after divorces, family gold collecting dust in safes, and jewelry that held emotional weight but no longer reflected who they were.

Over time, I realized that people don’t necessarily want more jewelry. They want meaningful jewelry that feels aligned with who they are now and that they’ll actually wear every day.

Now reconstruction and recycling projects have become one of the most rewarding parts of my work. There’s something incredibly powerful about taking old gold, old diamonds and that deserved a second chapter.

What the Process Actually Looks Like

A lot of people imagine reconstruction projects are intimidating, complicated or only reserved for massive heirloom collections. Not even close. Sometimes a project starts with a single ring, or a tangled pile of broken chains and unmatched earrings.

Sometimes clients know exactly what they want. Other times they just know they want something different. That’s where I come in.

Reconstruction work is collaborative, thoughtful and surprisingly approachable. Typically, it looks something like this:

We start with a consultation (in person or virtual)
You show me what you have
We discuss sentimental pieces, stones, metals and goals
I help identify what can be recycled, reused or redesigned
We sketch ideas and talk through options
Then the transformation begins

And yes, virtual consultations work beautifully too. I’ve worked with reconstruction clients all over the country, and have gotten very good at walking clients through the process remotely, including shipping, stone discussions, sizing kits and design development.

“But I Don’t Know If My Jewelry Is Worth Enough…”

This is one of the biggest hesitations people have. I’ve had clients assume they need enormous diamonds or extravagant heirlooms for reconstruction to make sense. I've had clients assume they need enormous diamonds or extravagant heirlooms for reconstruction to make sense. Some of my favorite projects have begun with modest pieces that simply deserve better lives.

Investing in solid gold jewelry isn't just about luxury. It's about longevity

We handcraft pieces meant to live with you for decades. You can wear them daily, collect new memories and meaning, and they’ll someday become heirlooms themselves.

In a world full of disposable everything, there’s something deeply grounding about creating jewelry that’s built to last from something that already held meaning.

The Emotional Part No One Talks About

One of the most meaningful things about reconstruction work is witnessing what happens emotionally during the process.

People come in thinking they’re redesigning jewelry. But often, they’re actually reclaiming parts of themselves.

A new beginning after divorce.
A way to honor someone they lost.
A reconnection to family history.
A decision to finally invest in themselves.
A transformation from “I should keep this because…” into “I love wearing this.”

That shift matters, and it’s exactly why I love this work so much.

Perhaps You Have a Piece Waiting, Too

Maybe you have a ring sitting in a jewelry box that no longer feels like you. Maybe you inherited pieces you’d love to wear, but never quite connected to in their current form. Maybe you’ve been curious about reconstruction work but assumed it would feel overwhelming, inaccessible or too precious to touch.

You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

That's what I'm here for.

Some of the most beautiful pieces we’ve ever created at CMD began as “I don’t know what to do with this…”

And ended as future heirlooms.

Let’s write a new chapter,
Colleen
