The Art of Ring Sizing
and Why It Matters More Than You Think

One of the most important parts of choosing a ring has very little to do with the design, metal or stones. It's getting the fit right.

A ring that fits well becomes part of your everyday. You reach for it without thinking, wear it for hours at a time and eventually forget it's even there. But getting to that point can take a little more consideration than simply knowing the number you've always called your ring size.

WHY SHAPE AND WIDTH CHANGE THE WAY A RING FITS

CMD rings aren't always traditional circles. I work with rounded squares, rigid squares, sculptural bands and stacks made up of several different widths and shapes, and each of those can sit a little differently on your finger.

Width matters too. A skinny band in your usual size may feel completely comfortable while a wider ring or multi-band stack in that same size feels more snug. That's one reason I pay close attention to the overall width of a piece when helping someone determine the right fit.

Your fingers also aren't exactly the same size all day long. Temperature, activity, hydration, food intake and other everyday factors can cause them to fluctuate, which is why I recommend trying a size more than once before making a final decision.

WHEN A RING SIZING KIT MAKES SENSE

If you already have a general idea of your size but want more confidence before ordering, our personalized Ring Sizing Kit lets you wear-test neighboring sizes at home. Each kit includes three sizes so you can compare how they move over your knuckle, how they feel when you bend your fingers and which one stays comfortable throughout the day.

Our kits can be customized for round, square or mixed-shape rings, and when I'm preparing one for a wider or more substantial design, I do my best to approximate the overall width of the finished piece. That's important because the closer the sizing rings feel to what you'll eventually be wearing, the more useful that test becomes.

If you're renting a Ring Sizing Kit before purchasing a made-to-order CMD ring, the current rental is $150. Return the kit within 3 business days using the prepaid label provided, and the $150 is issued as CMD store credit toward your ring purchase.

CUSTOM, RECONSTRUCTION & SPECIAL OCCASION SIZING

For Custom and Reconstruction projects and Special Occasion jewelry, sizing becomes even more important. These pieces often involve solid gold, diamonds, heirloom materials, wider proportions or one-of-a-kind designs, so we want to be confident in the fit before anything moves into production.

When a personalized sizing kit is required as part of one of these projects, we send it as part of the design process at no additional rental charge. We then pause before production so you have time to wear-test the sizes and make sure the fit feels right. That extra step helps reduce unnecessary resizing, added production time and wasted precious material later.

The goal isn't simply to find a number. It's to understand how the actual ring you're planning to wear will feel on your hand. When we're making something specifically for you, I want the fit to feel just as considered as every other part of the design.
