When I originally wrote this in 2021, CMD was in the middle of a pretty major transition. After more than 15 years of building my business in San Francisco, I had packed everything up and moved back East to Asbury Park, New Jersey. Our new shop wasn't even open for regular in-person visits yet, and after a year of virtual appointments and figuring things out as we went, so much about CMD was changing.
What hadn't changed was the heart of the business. I've always loved taking an idea that starts in my head, working through it at the bench and eventually seeing it become part of someone's everyday life. Behind every finished piece is a small team of women cutting, soldering, filing, sanding, polishing, problem-solving and paying attention to all the tiny details that make CMD jewelry what it is.
A lot has happened since this post was first published. Today, our jewelry is still handmade by our small team in Upstate New York, while The CMD Shop & Studio in Asbury Park has become a place where I meet with clients, build stacks, talk through Special Occasion pieces and imagine entirely new jewelry through Reconstruction. We're still a small, women-owned business, and I think that personal connection has only become more important as we've grown.
