If you've been following along with my Reconstruction videos lately, you've probably noticed something that looks a little... destructive. Rings are being cut apart, stones are being plucked, and gold and platinum are being dismantled into little piles on our studio benches. Every time I post one of those videos, someone inevitably asks, "Wait...what are you doing?"

It's actually pretty simple. We have to dismantle the old piece before we can create something entirely new.

I know that can sound a little unsettling, especially when we're talking about family heirlooms or wedding sets that have been worn for many decades. The wild part is, I don't look at those pieces and think about what I'm taking away. I look at them and immediately start imagining how we might completely transform them. I can usually see the finished design long before we’ve picked up a single tool.

My clients often come into an appointment apologizing for the ole baubles they're bringing me. They'll tell me it's outdated, too bulky, not their style anymore or that it's been sitting untouched in a box collecting dust for years. I always have to catch myself because we're looking at two completely different things. They're seeing something past its prime. I'm seeing stunning diamonds and stones, precious gold and endless possibilities.

That's really the heart of CMD Reconstruction. The goal was never to keep a ring exactly as it was forever, but to honor the parts that matter most. The materials carry the history, the memories stay with you, and the story doesn't disappear just because the setting changes.

Some of the most meaningful projects I've worked on started with jewelry that clients were convinced was beyond saving. Thick yellow gold mountings from the '90s, rings that no longer fit, pieces tied to chapters of life someone was ready to leave behind. But once we sit down together and start sketching, everything shifts. Suddenly we're talking about clean lines, everyday wearability, mixed metals, and finally creating the ring they always wished they had. The future Dream Stack slowly but surely coming to fruition.

That's why I love sharing these behind-the-scenes videos. Most people only ever see the finished jewelry. They don't get to watch the entire transformation happen, or the careful process of removing every diamond, evaluating the metal, sketching ideas, refining proportions and slowly bringing a completely new piece to life. The behind-the-scenes process is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do, and I think it's worth celebrating just as much as the finished reveal.

Taking apart outdated relics isn't the end of their story. In so many ways, it's the beginning. Every cut we make creates room for something that feels more personal, more wearable, and more aligned with the person standing in front of me today. That's what Reconstruction has always been about for me. It's never about erasing the past but about carrying it forward in a way that gets it back onto your hand instead of leaving it tucked away in a box.
