Meet Roshane Karunaratne, aka The General. Roshane joined me in Asbury Park in 2022 as one of the models for my new collection, The Hand Project. The project brought together everyday people with wildly different personalities, styles and stories, and Roshane brought a whole lot of music, color and energy to the mix.
Born in Staten Island, Ro was already a familiar face around Asbury Park when we photographed him. He could often be found cruising around town on his skateboard, long hair blowing in the wind, and music was a huge part of his world. I’ve always been fascinated by musicians, especially the kind who seem capable of picking up just about any instrument and figuring it out. When I learned Roshane played piano, guitar, bass and drums, I knew we needed to get him behind the keys during the shoot.
At the time, Roshane told me he daydreamed about playing music at the Seven Wonders of the World or flying a plane. He also loved trail biking, chess, kayaking and making animations. He and his friend Andrew made music together as Mister Tickle Hands, describing what they made as funky, psychedelic dance music designed to get people moving.
That combination of curiosity and playfulness made him such a natural fit for The Hand Project. The whole point was to see what happened when CMD jewelry left the display case and became part of someone else's personal style. With Roshane, the square rings, mixed metals and bracelets felt completely at home alongside the bright clothes, long hair and musician energy he brought to the shoot.
When I asked him what he thought about the jewelry, Roshane told me, “It’s a very unique style that I’ve never seen before.” I loved seeing that reaction because CMD jewelry has never been designed for one particular kind of person. The same square ring can feel completely different depending on whose hand it lands on, what they stack next to it and how they choose to wear it.
That was one of my favorite things about this entire project. Every model brought something different to the pieces, and Roshane made them feel unmistakably his.
